Decorating from A-Z (D is for DIY project)

I am constantly looking for new ideas for DIY projects to enhance my personal spaces and those of my clients.  My sources come from the internet, library books, magazine articles, nature, objects and just about everything out there with a curve or straight line.

When it comes to projects, my ultimate goal is to put my own personal stamp on the project at hand.  I found a link a few months ago that gave me the idea to make this pendant lamp out of Sisal.   The original used hemp string.   I found the Sisal to be more durable, nubby and textural.  I wanted to embellish it, spray paint it, or even dye the hemp, but found the natural fibers to be too beautiful to be tampered with.  The Sisal fibers are strong, biodegradable, recyclable and resist the negative effects of sunlight.

Take a look at these simple steps:

Pretty easy huh?

After removing the deflated ball, you’ll need a light hanging kit to complete the project.   They can be found at Pier One ($9.99), Pottery Barn($15.00), and Ikea ($3.99).

Before these lamps found a home, I hung them over the door to test out the functionality.

The pendant lamps found their home in this master bedroom.

Other cool uses for this Sisal

1. Sisal as a tieback for these bedroom drapery panels.  I switched from winter panels to a lighter summery linen.  The simple tieback gave it a casual flair.

2.  With so much sisal left over, my kids and I covered this vase and wine bottle.

3.  Here,  Sisal adds a nice texture to a wall space.

Were you inspired?  What cool things have you used Sisal for?  Do me a favor and check out the blog where my inspiration came from.  You’ll love what you see:  http://www.curbly.com/kellyb/posts/10462-make-it-hip-hemp-pendant-lamps
