Candelabra makeover
One of the exciting things about shopping at a thrift store is finding that diamond in the rough.
A recent trip to the salvation army was pretty uneventful until I discovered 2 hideous looking candelabras.
I picked them up, thought they looked awful and returned them to the shelf.
But just before leaving the store, I decided to double back to the hideous looking wood and metal things that were calling out to me.
I mean really, for $1.75 ( I thought) how can I go wrong? So I brought them home.
And Here’s what I did
I cleaned them, removed the built up wax and sanded the wood.
Picked up some Black glossy Krylon spray paint from Michaels
1 pack of 2″ eye pins – to assemble the gems ( jewelry section)
a quicker alternative is available at Lowes (pack of 5 for $5.99)
And Here’s how they turned out
I couldn’t decide if I liked them better with the embellishment or without. So…
I did a google search to see how much similar candelabras were selling for these days and here’s what I found.
So i think my $1.75 for each candelabra was well spent. Have you found any interesting items while thrift-ing? Was it worth it?

This turned out wonderfully! The collages were a nice touch as well.
Thank you!! I did have a wonderful teacher
Hi Ricci. Your candelabra turned out beautiful! I just did the same one. That’s how I found your blog. My computer ate my before pictures and I was hoping to find one that I could use. When I first painted mine I was going for that vintage turquoise and red look. It didn’t go well, I should have used the red on the iron and the turquoise on the wood. Not wanting to repaint it, I ended up going with wild pokka dots. It’s not really me but it’s kinda fun/cute. You did get a better deal on your than I did. I paid $3 for one. I also thought can I really make a cupcake stand out of something so hideous. But I took a chance thinking the biggest impact comes when you start out with the worst possible item. You can see mine here. http://cottonpickincute.blogspot.com/2011/09/betty-crocker-fun-da-middles-cupcake.html.
I really love your choice of bling or no bling. I like the simple one best too. Sorry to right a book but I was so surprised to find you with the same candelabra. I’m wanting to write a before and after post of it now. Is there any chance you have a single before pic I could use? I’d be happy to link back to you in my post.
Hugs…Tracy 🙂
