Got extra space? What are you doing with yours?

While many families are downsizing and the need to create multipurpose rooms is growing.  Some families actually have extra space.

Perhaps they are new empty nesters or decided to take advantage of low interest rates to invest in a larger home.  Whatever the reason, some of those spaces are vying for your attention.

Here are some ideas for what to do with your extra space.

Create a space to meditate, unwind and relax in.  Self care is paramount and essential for your physical, emotional and spiritual heath.  What are you doing to self nurture yourself?  Could you devote extra space in your home as your place to reconnect and refresh?  Notice there are no phones, Tv’s or electronic devices in this example.  The exception would be a CD player to play soothing relaxing sounds.

How about a library?  If you’ve always been an avid reader, and have run out of room to store your awesome collection of books, having a dream library is a terrific way to utilize extra space.  There are some pics below for inspiration.  No matter which style you like, don’t forget to include good lighting, nice comfy chairs, an area rug, a side table for your snacks or beverages and an ottoman to kick your feet up.  Photos or collectibles of some of your favorite things (hobbies) will also personalize the space.

Are you an avid movie buff?   Home theatre rooms are becoming a popular choice for entertaining and  indulging in the “movie” experience right at home.  Along with your essentials like your theatre seating, large screen tv and popcorn machine, try a few vintage posters, or cool themed lighting to enhance your space.  I also did a post on the “Man Cave” under the Design tips from A-Z category.  go over and check it out.

You might want to create a space to support your hobbies.  How about a room to do crafts, sewing, Painting, DIY projects?  You can have so much fun when you create your very own “creativity zone”.

There are many ways to turn extra spaces into functional rooms that are inviting.   Some of the above spaces may also double in function.

For instance the library can double as a home office.  The Home theatre room can double as a game room. The meditation room can become a sitting room. etc.
