Industrial Chic – It’s a metal thing!
What’s up with the industrial look? The industrial decor trend is the complete opposite of glitz and glam and is the latest trend taking us back to the basics. While we may be used to seeing this aesthetic played out in abandoned warehouses or loft style apartments of yesterday, today we’re seeing it everywhere!
In decor we’re finding new uses for old things and repurposing more and more. I wanted to create some candle holders that were edgy and cool and lacked “frou- frou” -ness.
Take a look at how using plumbing supplies helped me achieve this.
I picked these hex bushings up from Menards (local hardware store) the other day.
And lined them up to begin to create some really cool Industrial Chic taper holders.
Here’s everything you need for the project (this list if for one taper holder) but feel free to double, triple quadruple etc. if you want to make more.
- 11/2″ x 11/4″ hex bushing
- 11/4″ x 1″ hex bushing
- 1″ x 3/4″ hex busing
- 3/4″ x 1/2″ hex bushing
- 11/2″ union
- Taper candle
Before you begin use a soft cloth to wipe away any oil coating (typically found on metal plumbing parts to prevent them from rusting). These come in a black metal and galvanized silver (above). I prefer the galvanized silver, which was a little more expensive, but was less oily).
Step 1
Screw the threaded end of the 11/2″ bushing into one end of the union. Continue screwing the bushings into one another from the largest to the smallest.
step 2
Trim the bottom of the taper to fit into the bushing opening.
step 3
Place the taper into the opening and wallah!!!
When it’s all said and done this is what you have; edgy, masculine non “frou-frou” taper holders that were a cinch to make.
Now I just have to find a home for these cool holders, right now they’re on my kitchen counter giving the stainless steel a little competition.

I love these tables ( my candle holder would look great on these!)
