Do Your Bookshelves Have A Personality?
Bookshelves have been viewed as a solely functional piece used in homes to store books and other odds and ends. Shelving takes up wall space that could otherwise be used to decorate. Instead of wasting valuable design space, spice up your bookshelves with your favorite artwork and a little bit of color.
My favorite way to add personality to a bookshelf is by painting the background a bold color. In the picture above, this yellow gives dimension to the space. It also highlights the white accents on the shelves.
To add more dimension to the shelves, vary the height of the books. Placing them in descending order makes the eye fall downward. Stack some books on their sides for a different look.
Bookends are a great way to keep books in place and show personality. Choose bookends that are unique and stand out on the shelf.
Display personal pictures and meaningful items on your bookshelves. For me, I have a small glass bear that I was given when I was born, which I keep on top of a stack of books. Special decorations and memories, like these, should be displayed to remind you of great memories.
To keep the functionality of the bookshelf, arrange books with similar topics together. You can even display covers of books with creative covers for more color and to show the design. Bookshelves are also a great way to show off your collections. If you collect teacups, place them on top of books and in between stacks.
Spotlight your books or collections by placing a small light on a shelf. This could include a small light installed above the books. You could even place the light behind the books to create a shadow effect.
These are just a few ways to add personality to a common bookshelf. Remember, a bookshelf doesn’t have to be all about storage. Enhance the functionality of a bookshelf by experimenting with color, light, and art. Simple shelves will instantly turn into the focal point of your room.
