Decorating With White And A touch of Color

Caitlin shares how her trip abroad inspired her appreciation for white spaces with pops of color.

I was flipping through the pictures of my study abroad semester. I revisited every album, reflecting on the places I traveled. One of my favorite trips was to Mykonos, Greece. I loved how each building was painted the same white color. Most of the doors and shutters were painted blue against the stark white. The pictures above were taken in Mykonos’ “Little Italy”. Instead of the traditional white and blue, Little Italy adds striking reds and greens to the buildings.

This picture inspired me to look at clean white rooms with pops of color.

I love a white room. For me, a white room appears calm and peaceful. As much as I love white, we all need a little color in our lives. This is why I love the idea of white walls or furniture adorned with accents of a bright color.

This is one of my favorite rooms that I found. Here, white furniture, walls, and carpet are used to anchor the room. The black accents pop against the white. The color is brought in through pillows, curtains, and flowers. I think the best way to add color is with decorative pillows. Pillows come in many colors and patters, thus, are an easy way to add that “pop” to a room.

If you’re interested in a subtle look, small doses of color can be added. Flowers are a great way to bring energy to an all white room. These beautiful pink flowers pop against the white walls, shelves, and dishes.

Adding a color to one wall is another subtle way to add color. In this room, the white is broken up with color and texture by placing blue tiles on the backsplash. If the backsplash had remained white, the cabinets and windows would have blended together. By adding small amounts of color, you can highlight important features in a room.

Having a white bedspread is a big risk. I have one in my bedroom and I’m very particular about what gets placed on my bed. I have found it to be completely worth the worry. I love adding pillows with different colors and patterns. Like the photo above, I added a colorful throw to my bed. This bed frame also adds color to the white room.

You can still get this look without using a white bedspread if functionality is a priority.

If you’re nervous about painting your walls a bright color, using color accents is a great alternative. White is a blank canvas and is the perfect opportunity to start over if you’re confused about which colors you prefer. Pick 1 to 2 color accents to add to your room and you’ll have a calming, yet bright room to enjoy.
