Find Time for Twine: by Marissa
Some people, myself included, tend to forget that the most basic items can make the most creative decorations. Twine, for example, can be used so many different ways, especially around the holidays. Twine has a texture that reminds me of nature, and it is so easy and inexpensive to use in crafts. Here are some crafting examples to get you started:
1. Give Gifts a Natural, Crafty Look
Use brown paper from things like grocery bags, shopping bags, or lunch bags as wrapping paper. Stamp the paper with festive designs. Then tie the twine around the gift instead of a ribbon. I think homemade wrapping paper really shows the effort you put into a family member or friend’s gift.
2. Make Twine Ornaments or Decorations
Hot glue twine to different Styrofoam shapes, such as small cones or balls. Use as decoration on a mantel, for example, or glue a loop of twine to the top and hang as an ornament.
3. Decorate the Dessert
Tie twine in a bow around the wrapper of the cupcake for a cute design. You’ll really make people want to eat your cupcakes with how festive they look!
4. Basic Garland
Braid together three double strands of twine, and then hot glue fake fall leaves overlapping onto the braided twine. You may also add berries and other fall items onto the twine. Hang for a festive fall garland.
5. Twine Vase
Use the entire roll of twine as a vase… you don’t even need to unravel it! Simply place a small glass, such as a plastic shot glass, in the center of the twine spool and put the water inside. Cut the stems of the flowers and place inside for a pleasing design. You could even use artificial flowers for a longer lasting design.
Floral Design Tip: The design height should be at least 1½ times the container’s greatest dimension, either height or width. The only exception is for bud vases, rose vases, or vase arrangement. In those cases, the flower to container ratio should be 1:1.
TIP: Be sure to use different color variations of the twine to create an even more festive design!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT – AN INTERVIEW WITH “Susan Holleman” of CLASSIC HOME CONSIGNMENT
1. What motivated you to start Classic Home Consignment and why?
My motivation for starting CHC was realizing the need. This is such a transit community, with a reasonable amount of wealth. Most of us don’t enjoy having garage sales, and need an outlet for our quality furniture and home décor when we are ready to redecorate or simply get tired of our surroundings.
I also have been an advocate of recycling, repurposing, and reusing our resources for over 32 years. This gives me a chance to give everyone the opportunity to be green.
2. It must be tough making sure you accept the right items that are gently used. What are some challenges you have had to overcome in this process?
We have fairly strict guidelines for acceptance of merchandise, such as items must come from a smoke-free home, upholstered items from a pet -free home. We try not to have a lot of one type of item in the store, keeping our selection eclectic. We accept very little in the way of antiques, because that is not why customers come to our store. A lot of our selection is what is current today in decorating. We price items based on our five years experience. We want items to sell in 60 days.
3. How do you keep track of all the items in the store? Do you have an organization method that you find works best?
We have a very sophisticated computer program designed for our business to keep track of our consignors and their merchandise.
4. How do your products impact designers or people trying to improve the look of their homes?
We provide wonderful merchandise at reasonable prices, allowing anyone on any budget to make changes to their home décor.
5. What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
Seeing the same customers come back week after week. We have built a great clientele of shoppers and consignors. We have over 1600 consignors now.
6. What advice do you have for customers who are redesigning their homes?
Shop resale first. You will find unique items that you won’t find in regular retail stores.
7. Why and in what situations should people buy gently used furniture and home decor as opposed to brand new furniture and home decor?
When they are looking for something unique, and want to save money.
8. What is one of your favorite items from your store that you have come across since starting your business?
Pottery from Italy, for our main living space, and a large collection of aqua pottery in our bedroom. I have always been attracted to pottery.
9. What makes Classic Home Consignment successful?
We have created an inviting, warm atmosphere in which people enjoy shopping. Our Our daily change of merchandise, and our uniqueness keeps people coming back time after time, some on a weekly basis.
