What’s That On Your Floor?

Brian gives us a few good tips on rugs and why we should include them in our decorating plans. We also interviewed Karen of “Carpet Weavers”.   who shares why it’s a great place to shop for area rugs, hardwoods, ceramic tiles, and remnants.

Throughout human history, rugs have been an integral part of how people have decorated their homes.

Not only were they important pieces that contributed to the early family’s home, but they were also ways that artists expressed their thoughts and their culture.

This is also the reason why there are many different types of rugs in existence, such as Oriental rugs, Navajo rugs, and Persian rugs to name a few representing different cultures.

What makes rugs so special? All they do is cover the floor, or even cover up an unsightly mark on the wall if used as a wall hanging, right? Wrong.
If your home has wood floors or areas with lots of tile, a rug can help to make your floors look a lot less empty. If you remember my post from a little while back about why color matters in your home,

I mentioned in a picture caption that the addition of a naturally colored rug makes a perfect complement to the home and makes it feel just the right size.

Other benefits to decorating with rugs:

Rugs can prevent unsightly scratches or marks that could be left on natural wood floors.

Having your furniture sit on top of a rug can add to the longevity of your floors.

Rugs can also be a great way for you to express your interests. (Have an interest in Asian cultures and want to express it?) An Oriental rug placed under a table is a great, and subtle, way to show off your interests.

Have a nice warm cabin somewhere? Add the stereotypical bear skin rug in front of your fireplace to complete the look.

Ricci’s comments

Rugs serve as an Anchor for a room’s design so you want to choose something that you really love.  Sometimes when you can’t place art on the walls a beautiful rug can be your ART and make a profound statement in a room.

Here are some things to think about before you invest in your next rug.

Style – Do you want something traditional, contemporary or transitional?

Color – Deep tones to ground your space or lighter tones to lift it?

Natural fiber, Synthetic or a blend of both

Construction technique It is important to know how the rug is constructed as this will influence the price and quality of your choice. Examples might be Hand knotted, Hand tufted, flat weave, Machine made etc.

Shape – rugs come in a variety of shapes including round, square, rectangular octagon, oval, and more.

Know the dimensions of your room- In a living room rugs are traditionally at least the length of the sofa

When placing a rug on a hardwood floor, choose a rug that allows 8″ of space around the perimeter of the room.

Dining Room-  Measure the dining room table and add 4 ft to both the width and length, to allow for additional space when pulling the chairs out from the table.

Rug pads are important for 2 reasons; they  keep the rug in place AND preserve your investment (rugs begin to wear on the bottom first) so the pad will  help prolong it’s life.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

We’ve got “CARPET WEAVERS” in the spotlight this week.  Karen gave us some insight on her experience and why Carpet Weavers is a great place to shop for your flooring needs.

Carpet Weavers has been instrumental in assisting me with flooring needs for my clients. I love their selection, and quality of service.  If you have flooring needs they are an option worth exploring.

What type of flooring do you use?  Hardwood, rugs, wall to wall carpet, tiles or a combination 2-3?
