Decorating with Polystyrene from Lowes

by / Sunday, 11 December 2011 / Published in DIY TIPS, INSPIRATION STATION

After choosing our holiday tree this weekend, It was time to dig out the ornaments and get to decorating.

First I wanted the focal point (fireplace and built in bookshelves) to really stand out.

I removed the shelves so I could add some color and  dimension to the back.

I thought I’d use wallpaper, fabric or wrapping paper (as we discussed with previous tips) see this post

But after taking a stroll down the aisles of Lowes for inspiration, I stumbled upon the perfect solution. One that would cost less than fabric be easier to install than wallpaper and give the dramatic effect I was going for.

Here’s what I found:

1/2″ x 4′ x 8′ Polystyrene which is a foam board used for insulation.  It’s got a styrofoam texture and comes in a kool blue color or a shiny silver. Both were perfect for my project, but I chose the silver.

Next Lowes trimmed the sheets (2) to my specific dimensions which were 45.5 x 62 5/8.

Here’s how they look installed…no gluing, stapling, adding fabric…..just place the pieces in the designated space and Wallah you’re done….If you’d like you can reinforce the pieces with a little duct tape or (if you have enough space) re-installing the shelves will hold the board in place.

Next I reinstalled one of the book shelves which helped to hold the boards in place. You can see them here.

Remember the wreath from this post the other day?  See how to make it here.

I added ornaments, spray painted pine cones and a couple of tree limbs to this tall vase.  The up lights help to hi-lite the area.

Why decorate with Polystyrene?

Lightweight

Easy to work

Affordable

Dramatic results

Great Tip:

Since this has the texture of styrofoam you can easily use push pins to showcase your holiday cards as you receive them.

inspiring creativity,

Very cool! But…did you say “Wallah” on purpose? Or did you really not know that it’s “voila”?
