For most, fireplaces are a necessity when buying a home. Not only do they provide warmth in the winter, fireplaces instantly make a room feel cozy and relaxed. They can also be a focal piece in a room if decorated properly. With the winter months quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to make your fireplace a standout piece in your home.

Here are 5 ways to make your fireplace a focal point.

1.  Add a mirror

Adding a mirror above a fireplace adds dimension to a room.  If you have a smaller living area, this would be a great way to make the room appear larger.  It’s best to choose an interesting mirror shape or frame for the mirror.  This is what makes the fireplace the focal piece.   Be aware of the size of your mirror in relation to the room and mantel.  For example, a mirror too small will be unnoticeable in the room.

2.  Create an eclectic look

If you have mementos lying around your house, a mantle could be the perfect place for them to have a home.  To create an eclectic look, take odds and ends and arrange them on your fireplace.  Make sure that they vary in height.  Having unmatched accessories lined up across the mantle could appear messy.  Check to see that your objects somehow become cohesive.  The mantle below kept it cohesive by adding predominately white objects.  This is also a great opportunity to display some of your favorite collectibles.

3.  Add a clock

This is a pretty simple focal piece.  It adds design and functionality.  In this fast paced society, we can always use an extra clock in our homes!

4.  Skip the fire

If you have a nonfunctional fireplace, add decorative pieces within your fireplace.  Candles inside fireplaces are most frequently used.

Other ideas include adding pots or even lumber inside a fireplace.  The possibilities are endless.

5.  Decorate for the Holidays

The holidays are almost here!  That means it’s time to decorate your fireplace with lights and wreaths.  Below is a traditional take on the holiday decoration.  I like the use of the garland and different heights of the candles.

Remember the bold, white-framed mirror I discussed before?  It looks great with a wreath placed in front.  This is just another way to add more dimension and holiday charm.  Don’t forget to hang your stockings!
