Many home owners today are choosing hardwood, marble, and tile for the floors in their homes. These options are quite functional but some homeowners still feel unsatisfied with a seemingly bare floor. Are you wanting to create texture or color in a room? A rug, whether it be a neutral deep pile or a bold printed area rug, can define and bring a room together visually. Below are 5 tips to to keep in mind when adding a rug to a space.

1. Neutral vs. Color

If your room already uses bright colors or bold patters, it might be necessary to use a neutral rug to bring the space together. This room’s design includes a variety of textures, patterns, and bold colors.  The simple, neutral rug serves as a backdrop to display the unique features of the room.

If your design tastes are a little more tame and you prefer muted tones, go outside your comfort zone. Buy a rug in your favorite color or one with a print. It will become the center stage of your room.

2. Defining Space

If you have a large room to work with, don’t be afraid to add more than one rug to the space. Using multiple rugs will divide up the room, creating defined areas.

3. Texture

Texture is another interesting detail to experiment with when adding a rug. If you want something with an expensive, luxurious feel opt for a deep pile rug. The designer below made a bold choice to use faux animal skin to create texture.

4. Family Matters

Before making a final purchase, keep in mind the color and type of rug you want depending on if you have children or pets. If so, you’ll want something easy to clean with a color that can hide stains. It may not be so wise to buy that blue and white chevron rug you’ve been eyeing.

5. Layers

Layering rugs is a great trend to try. Some rugs don’t come in large enough sizes to cover the entire space you need. Layering a smaller rug on top of a larger one is an interesting look. The rug on the bottom is usually of a neutral color unless you love mixing prints.
