A neglected room gets a refresh

Whenever I visit my mom, I often acquire a new “thing”.  Sometimes it’s a treasured item that has been passed down from previous generations; sometimes it’s a  beautiful gift because she was thinking of me, and other times it might be what some would call “junk”.

You know those interesting things found in someone’s trash, garage sale, or second hand store?

My mom often sees the beauty or potential in those types of things and she finds herself bringing them home, or saving them for you know who.

She recently found these broken and dilapidated metal pieces that needed a little TLC.

It turns out that they would be perfect for sprucing up one of the neglected room’s in my basement.  If you’ve been following us, we mentioned this room in a previous post

Here’s what we did.

I picked up a bag of shells, river stones, and decorative reflective crystals from Michael’s

And Hot glued a design on the metal pieces for embellisment

I recruited my daughter to help; she broke some of the shells into pieces, to create a mosaic design.

Here’s how they turned out

I purchased a new sheet set to give the futon a fresh new crisp look (fitted sheet), and made a faux Roman Shade using the flat one.  The D I Y steps are noted on the previous post, it looks a little shade-y in here

To tie the look together, I purchased a few decorative pillows and candles 

The turquoise adds a vibrant energy to the space

I used the remaining shells to place around the candles.
