Lifestyle: Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipes

Lifestyle Mondays:

I was preparing to make some BBQ chicken wings the other day, and had about 3 tablespoons of ready made BBQ sauce left in the bottle.

It was one of those times, when I didn’t want the chicken any other way, I had a craving for a sweet, yet spicy sauce that would go well with my garden salad, and corn on the cob.

Do you ever have those cravings where you just want what you want and you don’t want to settle for anything else?

I decided to “Doctor” up the existing sauce from the bottle after looking at a few recipes I found online.  It turned out to be super delicious!  The kids even said it was the best BBQ chicken I ever made.

Here’s the recipe, I used.  It got 4.5 stars out of 5 on the allrecipes.com website

  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 dashes hot pepper sauce
  • Directions
In a blender, combine brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce. Season with mustard, paprika, salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce. Blend until smooth.  If you want a little more kick, add extra hot pepper sauce, a little more sweetness, add more sugar.

I found another one from the gracious pantry; a blog that promotes healthy eating.  There’s no image, but the recipe is a good one to try.

Dr. Pepper adds a sweet and savory taste to the sauce and the acid from the soda tenderizes the meat

Beer adds a flavorful dimension to cooking.  I grabbed this from The Black Pepper corn blog.

Once you make your own sauce and refine it, you’ll find it difficult to go back to the bottled stuff.
