Lifestyle: Home-made Valentines Gifts
I bought these glass jars in 2011 with the intent of using them for a gift giving project
I was considering making homemade Vanilla extract at the time.
Not only did 2011 slip by without them getting used, but so did 2012. Geeze…
So I can’t possibly let another year go by without putting them to good use.
Here’s what I’m thinking…
We’ve got 30 days before Valentines day….I think the jars would be perfect for bath salts or making a nice cologne.
I found 2 terrific recipes from mountain rose herbs, a site I use to purchase amazing herbal teas, and it’s also where I bought the glass jars 2 years ago.
So here’s what I decided:
I picked up my favorite scent of lavender essential oil (13.99)….I love, love love this sent! And grapefruit (9.99) to experiment with blending. These were from whole foods.
I purchased the required ingredients, assembled them and followed this recipe.
1. Sweet Lavender Bath Salts
Floral and relaxing, these salts are a perfect addition to any bath.
- 1 cup Salt (Epsom, Sea Salt, Dead Sea Salt, or a mixture)
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- 20 drops organic Lavender essential oil
- 1 TBSP organic Lavender flowers
Mix salt and baking soda together in a large bowl. Add essential oil and Lavender flowers, blend well. Package in a jar, or use right away.
And here are the results
Doubling the recipe yielded 4 bottles of homemade bath salts. I made 2 lavender and 2 lavender & grapefruit blends….they smell sooo wonderful!I embellished a few blank cards and gift bags with a few inexpensive “finds” from walmart.
And dressed the bottles with festive bows and a copy of the recipe.
These rhinestones, cards with envelopes (8 in a pack), gift bags and ribbon were all 97 cents each at Walmart.
Embellish a set of blank cards with ribbons, buttons, rhinestones, stickers, stencils etc. It’s a great gift for someone who loves to send notes and write personal letters.
Valentines day is not too far away, who do you know that might like a personal home made gift?
So the other recipe I promised is below:
I’m keeping the remaining 2 bottles for this project. In the meantime, you may want to give it a try. How about creating a unisex fragrance….hmmm sexy sexy!
2. Eau de Cologne
Makes 4 ounces
– 1/4 cup vodka or witch hazel
– 1/4 cup water
– 2 to 3 drops favorite essential oil or a mixture of citrus, lavender, rosemary, thyme and jasmine
1. Mix all ingredients together and pour into a clean bottle.
