Designing a Spanish Style Kitchen

If you’re seeking a kitchen that is rich, bright, and bold, then a Spanish style kitchen might be the perfect design for you. Whether you are starting from scratch or giving your kitchen a much needed makeover, below are some tips to how to achieve Spanish charm without spending a lot of money:

  • Paint: One of the quickest and most cost-efficient ways to change the feel of a room is to apply a fresh coat of paint. Spanish style color choices include oranges, burnt reds, warm yellows, and blues.  If you have wood trim in your kitchen, consider painting the walls one color and the trim a different color for a truly vibrant look. Or, repaint an old china cabinet a bright color to create an eye-catching piece.
  • Tile: Saltillo tiles are one of the features in Spanish style architecture. Retiling your entire floor can be expensive; however, there are other ways to add the tile element into your design. Consider installing a small tile backsplash, or tiling a small part of your countertop.
  • Refinish the Cabinets: Dark cabinets are a great contrast to the bright colors of your walls or tile. Instead of replacing your cabinets entirely, try re-staining the wood to a dark finish. You can even remove the doors entirely for an open-air feel which is common in Spanish kitchens. Distressing the wood is another great way to give your kitchen a truly rustic feel.
  • Replace your Dinnerware:  Give away your boring plates (or keep them as backups) and consider purchasing Spanish style dinnerware. From artisan glass to hand-painted ceramic pieces, the options are limitless when it comes to patterns, bright colors, and more. If you choose open style cabinets (as suggested above), these dishes will look great on display and oftentimes you can find them on sale or at discounted home goods stores.
