How-To: Repurpose a wine bottle for holiday inspiration
Have you ever had a project go wrong? You envisioned the perfect execution and then, the project just took on a life of it’s own?
Well that ‘s what happened here. We’ve all been there, but we somehow get through it. I love how my very determined intern Grace, still managed to create this cool project to share with you.
I set out to make a holiday craft this week and the one I had in mind was VERY simple, classic and could even be made from materials already in the house!
However, I was having one of those crafting nightmare days, where the sum of my vision and execution was a negative number.
This craft was a big old flop. So today I’ll walk you through a tutorial for a separate craft I made and will also attach a link to the one I had originally planned (on making) in case you have better luck!
Also, know that you are not alone in your DIY mishaps sometimes the project doesn’t turn out as planned, but a lot of times those mishaps end in a unique and personal project!
To start out I dug through my parent’s recycling bin to find an old wine bottle.
Then I soaked it in hot water to remove the label. I used WD40 to take off any remaining stickiness that wasn’t removed with water.
After drying the bottle I used a permanent marker to map out the quote I planned on writing on the bottle. This was to ensure that my spacing would be even, the lines straight and I wouldn’t forget any letters.
Then, I used a small hot glue gun to write out a quote from one of my favorite Christmas books, “…and visions of sugarplums danced in their heads…”.
My Grandpa reads The Night Before Christmas every year on Christmas Eve right before Santa shows up so it has some nostalgia attached to it as well.
After the glue cooled and I pulled off all of the stringy pieces, I sprayed the bottle with silver spray paint. I recommend spraying the bottom first by holding the bottle by the nose and working your way up.
Once that was done all that was left to do was tie a ribbon around the neck and set it aside for Christmas.
I thought that this would make a good centerpiece at a holiday table. Christmas Eve is one of the few holidays my large extended family is able to all sit at the same table for dinner and its a long one. If that’s the case for you as well consider making this craft and using quotes from your favorite book or Christmas song!
You could vary bottle sizes, use ribbons, and even paint colors, but the fact that the message is from the same source will make each piece cohesive.
Originally I had planned on filling a large green wine bottle with multicolored lights and topping it with a gold bow. Hoping it would look like an abstract Christmas tree. This was my inspiration ( bottle):
I soon realized thought that in order to get the lights inside I would need to drill a small hole at the base of the bottle. I was too afraid to break the glass and decided to explore another course of action.
I am not thrilled with the execution of this project but I did what I could with the time and resources that I had. Luckily I started my holiday crafting way in advance and have time to perfect this project before Christmas!
