How to Wednesday: Guest Post Let your christmas creativity flow
If you have young kids to entertain this holiday season, here are a few fun projects to engage them in from our guest blogger Simon Calvin from- http://www.ukchristmasworld.
Let Your Christmas Creativity Flow Do you have too much time off on the lead up to Christmas and you’re not sure as to how to spend it? Why not let your Christmas creativity flow by having a go at some Christmas crafts. There are a variety of different activities that you can take part in. For the best experience we suggest that you try one of the following; we’ve even gone to the trouble of presenting you with the best tips and tricks to go about your Christmas crafts. #1 – Origami Dinosaur Decorations There are a multitude of shapes and sizes that you could create when it comes to creating paper dinosaurs. However to achieve the best effect we suggest that you use a wide range of textures and colours to create your paper dinosaurs; if you’re making more than one ‘species’ (shape) of dinosaur you should attempt to use the same colour and texture combination for each individual species.
To avoid ruining your paper creations by putting holes in them in order to hang them on the tree we suggest that you instead sit your origami dinosaurs on the branches of your Christmas tree. It can take a lot of practice for you to get your technique perfect; but the key is perseverance and determination. #2- Pom-Poms Felt pom poms are one of the best materials that you can possess when you’re getting to grips with craft. These pom poms can have a number of uses; although one of the best uses is to decorate homemade Christmas cards with them. As well as decorating your Christmas cards you can also create a number of different items out of this particular item – they also make welcome additions to cushions, knitted jumpers and Christmas hats.
#3 – Assorted Christmas Decorations To make one of these wonderful decorations you will need a festive themed fabric, some ribbon, cotton wool and a needle and thread. First draw a template of the design that you would like and attach this template to the edge of the fabric with pins.
- Once you’ve done this you should carefully cut around the template; thus cutting the fabric to the same shape and size as the template.
- Once you’ve cut out two fabric templates you should stich or sew together half of the templates and then use the cotton wool to stuff the item.
- Use the same colour thread to sew the rest of fabric shut, excluding a 2cm gap.
- Take the ribbon and create a loop; sew the ends of the loop together to create a handle/a method of hanging the decoration.
- Place the sewn end of the ribbon into the gap that you have left within the decorations and sew the rest of the fabric together.
Your basic decoration should now be complete – if you wish to add additional details to your Christmas decoration you can use bits of paper, spare fabric and thread. Fabric glue is the best adhesive for you to use in this situation.
#4 – Copper Christmas Tree
To create this interesting space saving item all you will need is some thin copper piping and a number of decorations that you wish to attach to your ‘tree’. The best way for you to do this is to use a pencil, paper and ruler to create a basic Christmas tree template. Place your copper piping onto the template and gently bend the piping to match the sketch behind it. Be careful when bending the piping as if you apply too much pressure you could end up breaking the piping rather than bending it. The number of Christmas crafts that you could take part in is endless; for the best results we suggest that you experiment with a variety of different materials, techniques and simply let your festive creativity flow free.
