Monday inspiration: What do I mean by soulful spaces?
Soulful spaces is a phrase I’m toying with for my elevator speech. I am often asked, what my style is or what my natural design inclination is when I design spaces.
The truth is, it’s very eclectic. It has evolved from various styles ranging from contemporary, mid century modern, transitional, global chic, rustic elegance, to simple clean lines and the list goes on.
Everytime I go to a design show, I fall in love with and have an appreciation for an entirely new design aesthetic.
But what’s most important to me, is the design style of my clients, and the vision they have for their home.
In a nutshell, I believe we purchase houses, but they don’t become a HOME until we put our personal stamp on them with things we love and value. This is what gives a home a soul.
And that means adding things to the house that mean something to you. Things that don’t just look good, but feel good and meet your needs.
Here’s what I mean
1. Choose a color palette that resonates with your personality. If you are introspective and laid back, vibrant colors may not be your thing.
This bedroom has a global sensibility. It showcases textured walls, and patterned upholstery, giving it a soulful earthy look.
2. After the main furniture is placed, what gives a home a soul are those important things that emotes special feelings.
I love how the organic nuances give this room a soul, along with the plush throw, warm wood elements and chocolate textured chair.
3. Of course this is different for everyone. Perhaps it’s a visual collage of your family’s lineage, or the honeymoon trip you took and brought back items that will create lasting memories.
If tennis is your thing, tennis rackets added to your decor will remind you of your passion.
4. Maybe it’s the one chair or sofa, that has been passed down in your family for many many years, and just keeps getting reupholstered and updated.
5. It’s also the final stage of each design plan where the jewelry, seasoning or “flava” is added. It’s what often connects the dots of the overall theme or mood.
6. Creating a soulful space can be dynamic, regal, elegant, casual, Zen like, kid/pet friendly, sophisticated, clean and clutter free, it could be these things and everything in between.
7. What ever it is for you, it’s important to tune in to that “thing” or “things” that will welcome you to the most important place in our life….HOME.
