How-to Wednesday: The secret to mixing patterns successfully
There is definitely an art to mixing patterns successfully. If you’re wondering how designers make unusual shapes, mixed textures, and very different prints ” play nice together” here’s how.
There are essentially a few things you’ll want to look for
1. Begin with a common color. This can be your favorite color or a color in the room. Once selected, this color should be repeated in each piece.
2. Choose several patterns with your chosen hue.
3. Odd numbers are magical and choosing at least 3 is recommended.
4. The first pattern should be your signature pattern….It should set the tone for others to follow.
3. Vary the scale – this allows each piece to stand on it’s own, yet complement each other.
4. Vary the texture – for example, smooth and nubby textures or horizontal and vertical lines add interest and create movement.
5. Try to work with the same color saturations for better harmony.
