Sundays with Ydp: Outdoor rugs for indoor use Yes or No?
I painted my family room this past spring (you may remember this post), and a few weeks ago, I replaced the sofa and added an indoor/outdoor rug to the space.
I chose this indoor/outdoor rug because I liked the geometric print, loved how it harmonized with the wall color and I wanted to see how it compared to the hand knotted wool rug it replaced. Here’s what I discovered.
On the plus side
-
No shedding
-
Stands up to significant sunlight with UV inhibitors
-
It’s lightweight
-
Adds a fresh new look without breaking the bank
On the negative side
-
Short lifespan 2-8 yrs if used indoors and even less when used outdoors.
-
Vacuuming is not recommended- it’s recommended to shake it/hose it clean
-
Comfort factor is missing- not comfy and has no pile
-
Folds (from shipping) are annoying and take a while to disappear
If you don’t mind replacing your rug fairly often and comfort is not a deal breaker…the outdoor rug is a good shoe-in for updating a space affordably. You may even try it in sunrooms, mudrooms, kid spaces, vacation homes, and staging projects.
As for style options? They are through the roof!
Design Tip of the Week
Always use a rug pad for your area rugs.
They extend the life of the rug by reducing wear and tear between the rug and the floor,
enhance circulation and minimizes shifting and bunching.
And they add extra comfort and cushioning.
Bonus tip
Rugs are usually rolled or folded for shipping and the folds can take up to a week to disappear. To expedite crease removal, reverse rolling the rug overnight with the pile or pattern to the outside.
Which room Would you put an outdoor rug in?
