Sundays with Ydp: Before and After art project
Painting on canvas is something that I’ve always loved. I often save inspiration pictures from Pinterest that look cool, and seem easy to replicate. Here are a few examples of what I mean.
Recently, I met a fellow interior designer who is also a skilled artist. I felt so blessed that she was willing to give me a few art lessons.
Below is from my first lesson.
It’s nothing short of a miracle that I’ve been able to create this lovely abstract. At best, stick figures were my level of expertise and abstracts (that looked, let’s just say) a little cray cray.
After meeting Patti just a few short weeks ago, I’ve learned so much about technique, what brushes and type of paint to buy and even how brush strokes should be placed on the canvas. I crack up just thinking about her saying “Ricci don’t pet your piece to death”. So even the brush strokes are integral to how well a painting turns out.
My 2nd inspiration piece was from a trip My hubby and I took this past summer. We were in London at the time. What I liked most about this pic, is that I’m not posing. In fact, I wasn’t even aware that my husband was taking this picture.
This piece took quite a bit more time than the first one; and from the looks of it after day one, It was hard to believe it would turn out well.
The First day
The focus was on simply sketching the image and applying the paint fairly loosely.
Day2
Details were added on day two, giving the trees more life and refining the sidewalk.
One technique I learned was to turn the painting upside down periodically. This way, it provided a different perspective and freedom that keeping it right side up didn’t offer.
Day3
More details were applied as I learned more about color blending, shadows and lighting.
Day 4
The piece was completed on day four. We took creative license and made a few changes with the lighting, and I’m thrilled to pieces at the progress. As I mentioned earlier, It’s nothing short of a miracle, that I’ve come this far. I’m so thankful for Patti’s patience, because I was not the ideal student.
I am so encouraged to continue refining this craft and hope to partner with Patti to do a workshop soon. If we decide to do one and you’re interested in joining us. Leave a comment below.
