Sundays with Ydp: 3 African American Interior Designers We Admire
Guest Post:
As an African American interior designer, I feel it’s important to support other designers in this industry; especially if they look like me. In the spirit of Black History Month, here are a few we would like to recognize.
Cecil Hayes, Coconut Creek, Florida
Quote: “My decorating talent allows me to see a space as an empty canvas waiting to become a composition of shapes, colors and textures.”
Accolades: She’s the first African-American as well as the only designer from the South to be named to Architectural Digest’s Top 100 list of influential designers in the world. In addition Cecil has been named to the NAACP Hall of Fame, the national Historymakers as a “Stylemaker”, and her work is featured in the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
What We Like About Her Design: Cecil doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to the details. Little things like that extra accessory on a counter top make for elevated design.
Darryl Carter, Washington, D.C.
What He’s Known For: Neutral palettes that let the artwork selected, shine.
Accolades: He Has Been featured in many different design magazines including Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Traditional Home. He also has home collections with Thomasville Furniture, The Urban Electric Company, and Frontgate.
What We like About His Design: Although he designs with a neutrals in most homes and spaces, he manages to make each venue look unlike the last.
Erin Shakoor, Chicago, Illinois
Fun Fact: Erin has her Certificate in Historic Preservation through Northwestern University’s, Continuing Studies Program due to her passion and support of Chicago’s historic neighborhoods.
Accolades: Her firm was selected by the Merchandise Mart Design Center as one of an exclusive group of firms to represent the Designer On Call program.
What We Like About Her Design: She can mix traditional design with modernism, and throw in a bit of vintage. but it all complements one another.
