Sundays with Ydp: How to choose the right fabrics for your projects
Your space can be amazing just by choosing the right fabrics. I get super excited when my vendors introduce their new fabric lines and I can’t wait to touch them and see how they might work in projects I’m designing.
The fabrics below are from recent projects I’ve designed and a few considerations for new ones.
I love the trio here. Each fabric has it’s own individual “thing” but collectively sing in the space it was designed for. The white sheer stripe was used for kitchen sheers. The textured faux silk, to add color to the great room and the matelasse’ for enhancing the master suite. We were going for harmony between rooms and I believe we achieved it. These rooms were featured here a couple of weeks ago.
Here’s the kitchen, greatroom and master suite.
This Embroidered sheer was used in a family room and provided a nice juxtaposition with it’s dark brown leather.
I’m not typically a fan of blue, but these fabrics were used in our media room. Even I have to step outside of my comfort zone from time to time. The top diamond motif was a medium scale geometric print, paired with a smaller one, which worked well with the textured grey sofa fabric. I chose The sofa fabric for it’s resilient fibers synthetic resistance to stains and soil.
I am considering these fabrics for a future project. Even though the colors are neutral, the textures and prints will add significant interest to a living space.
And these mixed prints are just lively and fun and perfect for someone not afraid of color.
Design tip of the week: Choose fabrics that feel good, look good and play well with your surroundings. Mix your textures, and prints, and vary the scale for design fabulosity!
How do you choose the right fabrics for your project? keep these tips in mind
- Synthetic fibers are your friend they are easy to maintain and hold up to the direct sunlight
- Fabric with a cleaning code W or SW are easier to maintain
- Leather is terrific for easy maintenance
- Look for fabrics that add interest and don’t compete with one another
- Look for fabrics with different textures. mix soft with nubby, smooth with rough and large prints with small ones.
- Synthetic fibers mixed with natural fibers give you excellent color saturation and good durability..the best of both worlds.
