Sundays with Ydp: How to measure for Draperies and Shades
Happy Sunday everyone!
I have been receiving quite a few inquiries about window treatments and the proper way to measure
for draperies and shades.
Why on earth would you want to measure yourself? Well, here are a few reasons.
- It’s eazy peazy
- It helps to expedite the ordering process
- It could save you $99-$175 from your total purchase
- We provide an easy template as a guide
- It’s ideal for distant clients
- Did I mention that it was eazy peazy?
I’ve included a number of images to help explain the process.
- Here is our empty room with two windows side by side
2. Some clients like their curtains hung just to the window sil. For example, an older home may have a radiator under the window, or in many homes, the kitchen windows are often placed above the sink.
3. Other clients like the idea of hanging their curtain or drapery panels to the floor. In this image the curtain is hung a few inches above the trim and touches the floor.
4. This image shows the curtain hung as high as it can go. My fav!! And there is a slight puddle on the floor.
5. If you have two side by side windows, one way to cover them is with a pair of drapery panels on each window.
6. You can also treat the windows as one large window and enhance them with a single pair of panels. This is a popular choice for many households today.
If you are considering shades, they offer an appealing look with clean lines.
7. The inside mount is prefered when you want to showcase beautiful trim or molding.
8. Outside mounts are best when the window depth is too shallow. There is also an opportunity to give the illusion of wider windows, with this option.
So how do you measure?
Our measuring guide below, will guide you with the measurements needed for both draperies and shades. We hope you find it helpful.
Design tip this week
One of the most important considerations in measuring, is including the wall space around your windows. This helps us determine where your hardware or drapery rods will hang and If there is enough clearance. It is equally important to provide the depth of each window, particularly if you are considering an inside mount. Many times the depth is too shallow, and an outside mount is preferable. Always include a photograph of the windows you’re measuring. This provides an overall view of the space which enables your provider to recommend the best possible solutions and styles.
We will be uploading photos of some of our most recent window treatment projects in the next couple of days. Stop back and let us know what you think.
