It’s that time of year when we start spending more time indoors.  When the temperature drops, I start thinking of ways to “up” the cozy factor in my home and extend the feel of what I love most about summer. It also reminds me of how shorter days and less sunshine can have an adverse affect on so many people.

Luckily, there are things we can do to maximize our time inside and add a fresh outdoor vibe during the cooler months.

1.  Decorate using elements of nature

I love that pillows are an affordable way to enhance a space. The leaf and fern motifs below add a fresh and inviting vibe to this vignette.

2. Invite mother nature inside through art

Yup you can bring the sun inside thru art.  I like the triptych below because it visually invites a sense of warmth.

“Sun through the trees” 3 Piece Framed Photographic Print Set Size: 33.5″ H x 52.5″ W x 1″ D – $221.65

from: Wayfair

The art below invites mother nature inside via abstract florals.  Imagine this piece in a home office or guest room. Inspirational right? I found this on the Wayfair site, when shopping for a client.

Add a cluster of three to six  floral prints like this one from the minted site or try your hand at painting your own.

3. Create a focal point using wallpaper. This floral motif gives a nod to mother nature for sure.

4. Add fresh cut flowers in your home decor.  It’s my favorite way to bring the outdoors in. I like to add them to my entryway, bedroom, and powder room. The entryway makes a good first impression, my bedroom side table gets a punch of color and the powder room feels more fresh and inviting for guests.

Invite a little of the outside inside your home this fall and winter. You will feel more connected to mother nature. Promise.

This Week’s Design Tip

Take a Sunday drive today to a park or lake and look for inspiration from mother nature. Now figure out a way to translate your findings into your home.

Here are a few suggestions

  • Place a few seashells into a vase to remind you of a relaxing ocean
  • Snap up a few photos of the changing leaves on the trees or of your fav nature shots and then frame your work.
  • Are you an artist?  Grab a few paint brushes, paint and a canvas and find something incredible to paint.
  • pal
  • I’m no photographer, but I enjoyed taking these shots from different places around Cincinnati.
  • Add small rocks or pebbles to a few tall vases to invite texture.
  • Collect fallen tree branches and sticks, then hot glue a cool design onto canvas for an original cool art concept

Floral motifs found in art, accessories and photography are wonderful ways to invite summer into your home all year round.
