Holiday decor that can save you money
I enjoy shopping for family and friends during the holiday season, and unfortunately it’s difficult to excercise restraint when I see so many awesome things. Inspiration is literally everywhere. I decided I’d add a few small pieces to our holiday decor, but I wanted to be smarter about it this year. So here are two tips worth sharing.
Buy items that still look great past the holiday season
This Throw and Pillow are lovely finds from Target. Both were between $20 and $30 While they look festive for holiday decor, they will still look great far after the holiday season. The snowflake pillow is a solid color on the other side and will blend nicely with any grouping of pillows in your home. The neutral white fluffy cable knit throw can be draped on any bed, sofa or chair without skipping a beat.
Make it yourself
I also picked up this deer on canvas print for my fireplace from Target ($30) I wanted a larger one for the kitchen fireplace with a rustic sensibility, so I decided that making it would save me a bundle and be fun to boot.
I decided to buy this 24″ x 24″ pre cut wood from Home Depot for $4.32. I also needed frog tape (which was already in my arsenal of supplies)
I used this Google image as my template for the design
And sketched it onto the wood
Try light strokes with your pencil so the pencil marks don’t come through the painted piece
Now it’s time to start taping off your design, making sure you cut smaller pieces for the more intricate areas.
This is how it looks all taped up…So I’m ready to apply the paint. You can use any color, or sheen. Just slather the paint on and have fun. I thought about going for a two toned look, using glitter for juxtaposition. And I considered using tree sticks to give it texture and a really cool rustic vibe. In the end, I decided “Ain’t nobody got time for that”.
Maybe next year if I start earlier.
Well here’s how it turned out in the end. I did have to go back and clean up some of the edges. Make sure you press down on the tape, so the paint doesn’t seep through and make sure you use a light hand strokes with your pencil marks. I had to do a ton of erasing, which could have been avoided.
In the I like how it pops against the exposed brick in my kitchen
So how do you save money? Buy items that take you beyond the holiday season and try making your own. Inspiration is everywhere. Find yours and give it a go.
