When you spend time helping others update their homes, you may not have the time or energy to make your own space thrive and that my friends is not okay.

So I decided that it was time for a little refresh of my own. We have been in our new home for a year and 2 months now and it’s time to get it together 🙂 Here are some before shots of the room

Like many of my clients, the sky is NOT the limit with my budget.  In fact, I believe that if I were a trillionaire, I’d still be conscientious about my spending….okay well maybe not as much (wink wink)

So it all started with this framed abstract art piece and a fabric swatch.  Yep sometimes that’s all you need to inspire change.fabric and art

I found the art when doing a shopping romp for clients. I wasn’t even sure where I wanted it yet, but I knew I had to have it….for one, I love tones of orange and in some way it reminded me of a tropical paradise (in an abstract kinda way).

I was drawn to the turquoise, sea green, and dusty gray tones and decided that it would work perfectly in the bedroom; especially for summer.

SO WHAT IS A TYPICAL BEDROOM REFRESH AND HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?

A refresh usually involves adding a few new items to your bedroom, but primarily working with your existing furniture. It also differs from client to client but will likely include some or all of the following.

  • Determine the vibe or mood are you seeking for your space
  • Find an Inspiration piece that sets the tone for the room
  • Decide on a focal point in the room
  • A Fresh coat of paint or wallpaper
  • Pillows & accessories for ez affordable wows
  • Update lighting
  • Meaningful items unique to you
  • Decluttering and editing the space is essential
  • Storage of some sort or multifunctional pieces
  • Window treatments
  • New bedding
  • Area rug (s)
  • Seating

For my project, the first order of business was choosing a deep paint color to accent two walls in the room.  The one behind the bed and the fireplace wall. I wanted to emphasize their shape and provide a color that would make the art sing and add depth to the space.

I purchased new bedding and had custom Euro shams, a bed skirt (not included in the images) and window treatments made to give the room life and set the mood for a tropical vibe.

The deeper wall color now stands out against it’s lighter sides, adds depth and helps the art take center stage in the room.DSC_1892The drapery panels are simple, casual rod pockets hung with rings for a relaxed vibe, yet the slight puddle elevates the look. The custom Euro shams play nice with the turquoise throw found at home goods.  And the new lamps play nice with the custom drapes.  It’s easy to achieve affordable design goals with a combination of ready-mades and custom elements.DSC_1915

This is a view from the sitting area where I had fun painting the cute little piece behind the sofa.

When time allows, I have grand visions for this master suite. Visions of new flooring, a upholstered tufted bed (we’ve had this one for ages and ages) , chandelier, new seating and an area rug in front of the fireplace. I’d  also like to update the fixtures, flooring shower and tub in the master bath. This however, would be in the A-Z full redesign category which will happen in stages.

In a nutshell, most people only need a Refresh to create a more inspiring space. Sometimes we put things off until we can do EVERYTHING  and you know what? We end up doing NOTHING.  Yup I’m guilty too.

DESIGN TIP THIS WEEK

Pair custom furnishings and accents with ready made items to avoid obliterating the budget. Try painting one wall for depth and interest. Look for inspiration in everyday things, it just may inspire the change you need.
