Embrace your culture in your home decor

You may travel the world and find treasures that speak to your soul.

You might have family heirlooms that remind you of special moments.

Or you may be like me, someone who finds certain things attractive simply because you like them.

That is until you begin connecting the dots.

What do I mean?

Well, I always found myself drawn to African prints, deep hues, rich textiles and all things global.

I designed our first home with global and African elements, strayed away over the years and am finding myself right back to this design aesthetic.

Why?

After I got the results back from a recent DNA test and found that my family roots are connected to Nigeria, The Cameroon and Congo,

I realized I’m expressing my love for this aesthetic on a much deeper level than I realized.

To know the joy I felt with this discovery is indescribable. There is something liberating and validating when you have a connection to your true identity and not have to wonder.

Wonder, because of lost records of your people. Wonder, because you took on the namesake of someone other than your family name during a difficult time in history.

Wonder, because many of your people were separated and lost family connections many generations ago. All this history becomes a part of you, on a cellular level, deep beneath the surface.

You know how sometimes, you intuitively feel a certain kind of way and you’re not sure why?

I’m certainly no psychologist, but I believe we should connect to the things that really resonate within.

It’s why I pay attention to how clients react to recommendations I may make or how they respond to colors, patterns, textures etc.

I’m looking for a connection, a smile a response. It’s when I know I’m on the right track.

So what am I really saying?

I am suggesting that you embrace your culture in your home decor if it makes you happy.

  1. When you decorate your home or office, discover what feels authentic to you, lean into it and be open.
  2. Don’t overthink things, or worry about what others think, it’s your home after all.
  3. First choose your functional pieces like seating, lighting, and storage, tables etc.
  4. Then look for the “seasonings” or cultural elements that connect to your soul
  5. It could be one room or many, but start somewhere even if you start small.
  6. look for cultural elements in art, wallpaper, family heirlooms or antiques, then mix them with your decor to create wow moments in your home.

Your home should be your happy place and your best place.
