This Paint tip will save you a lot of money

So what happens when you are close to running out of paint and you still have a fair amount of painting left to do?

This is precisely what happened with me. In less than three months my office space doubled from a tiny 9 x 9 space to twice its size.

I had already purchased a mis tint in a blush color and was sure I wouldn’t have enough to paint the additional space.

Flexibility is key

The first thing I decided to do, was choose an additional color to work with.

I did this for two reasons. One was to add interest to my office and 2,  I knew I could find an affordable mis tint from the local paint store.

So what exactly is a mis tint?

It’s a super awesome way to get great paint at a fraction of the cost!!! It’s also a tip I learned from one of the smartest women I know (my mom)  🙂

Most retailers have a section of paints that didn’t quite match what a customer intended.  I call it the graveyard of paint colors.  It’s not a pretty site and you do have to exercise some patience when looking.  Some cans won’t be labeled, so you may be taking a risk with the type of paint or color you’re getting.

The good news is, an associate will usually offer you a key to open and view the contents of each can before making a purchase.

If you’re not married to a particular color, this could be a great way to score a gallon of paint (sometimes even 5 gal. sizes)

Once you score your chosen color

They will ring it up as is or if you’re lucky, they may mix a new color for you. For example, I found a SW color in agreeable gray (below). What I really wanted was something closer to a blush hue. SW smokey Salmon looked like a win. I provided a sample of the color I was going for and asked if they could match it. The good news is, they did and it turned out beautifully.  Note:  it wasn’t a perfect match, but it was close enough for me. (again, it’s important to be flexible)

 Significant Savings

At the end of the day, my new paint color was $10 and it was the Cashmere formula which I love. Cashmere on a good day might be three times that amount and that’s when it’s on sale.

Get creative

Another way to stretch your paint dollars is to get creative. Even though I purchased an additional color for my walls in this gray, I still wanted to use what was left of the salmon/blush color.

I decided to add a geometric design on my office wall for kicks. It was the perfect way to use up the remaining blush color from my original purchase and create a cool feature wall.

It flows with my geometric lines of my branding and logo, and some of the other elements in the space. Below is how it all came together.  I ended up with one creative wall, one gray wall and one blush wall in this sitting area for a fraction of the cost.
