According to an article I recently read in a trade magazine (before Corona) I was taken aback by the current statistics.
“Online furniture sales have out performed brick and mortar furniture sales for the past 5 years”
Call me old skool, but when it comes to sofas and chairs, I’ve always preferred shopping local to give my clients an opportunity to test drive the depth and comfort for seating preferences. And there is something to be said for us tactile folks who like to take in the entire experience to touch how soft or rough a surface might be.
It appears however, that this is not as important anymore.
Online furniture sales are expected to reach a market volume of $289.3 billion in 2023
What’s most alarming is that this statistic and article was written before the Corona pandemic.
1. Online shopping is Easy and Convenient
I know, I know this is no surprise to any of us, but studies have shown that it comes down to being convenient and easy to research products online, compare prices and find the best deals.
When you Include the purchase confidence that customer reviews provide, and the highly detailed product images, it’s no wonder people are comfortable buying a couch they’ve never seen in person, or even a new mattress they never tested out.
2. Better variety
The amount of time it would take you to go to all of the big brand stores to shop for a couch would be insane. Online, the options are endless and easy to save and click through (thanks to Houzz and Pinterest). Even if a brick and mortar store carries the collections you love, they’ll never have the floor space to display it all. By jumping online you can easily browse every item in every collection and in every possible variation in a fraction of the time.
3. Better prices
Stores that don’t have brick and mortar counterparts, like Wayfair or Joss and Main don’t carry the same overhead costs, and can offer their products for less.
4. Fast and free shipping
Amazon is making us wildly impatient. We want immediate gratification and two-day shipping is just too good to pass up.
5. No gas required
I don’t need to tell you how nice it is to stay in your thermostat controlled house, drinking a cup of tea while you shop. There’s no need to go out in horrible weather, deal with traffic or stand in line at crowded stores.
This long list of perks combined with tech advancements has created a perfect storm for designers who offer e-Design and virtual consultations for their communities.
