That’s Pinteresting: 3 Trends in Vacation Home Decorating
Not into trendy cliche`d design, Grace explores a few personal favorites that will have you reconsidering typical vacation themed decor.
It’s easy when decorating a vacation home to stick to the cliche areas of design: pastels in palm trees for beach homes and dark wood and antlers for lake houses/cabins. So, today I thought it would be fun to explore some of the ways to keep the vacation vibe but with a trendy and original touch!
Trend #1 Brass
Brass accessories have been a hot trend in home decor for 2013. Its neutral enough to fit nearly all decorating themes yet still remains bold enough to make a statement.
One feauture that always stands out to me in beach homes (and that I personally find to be a very tired accessory) is ceramic sea shells, sail boats, flip flops and so on.
The transition to brass accessories in similiar styles and shapes, replaces the kitschy ceramics with the timeless brass.
This brass panther adds whimsy to your space but still keeps a level of class. In a second home, its important to have fun with your decorating and brass allows you to do so without it feeling over the top. This panther would also be awesome in a woodsy naturally themed home.
I love this lamp for the beach, because it gives off the impression of a wave but in a more abstract execution.
Trend #2 Warm, Modern Materials that Carry a Vintage Feel
Anything vintage is super on trend right now and vintage home accessories are everywhere! They really warm up a space and add a great style element with their classic design and worn surface.
My suggestion for decorating with vintage pieces is to use them as a statement. Use your grandmother’s vase as a centerpiece, an old plate to catch the room keys right when you walk in, or a sturdy old serving tray to catch sandy/muddy shoes near the front door.
I love the idea of vintage advertisements in a lake house. I think they really enhance the rustic motif and add a familiar and nostalgic vibe to the space.
Reusing old materials is a trend in itself and adds a vintage feel to any space. I especially love this chair made of old waterskiis.
Trend #3 Art
Art work in a home is becoming more and more prominent. There are tons of galleries located in many tourist heavy areas.
Make a day of going out and shopping for artwork! Whether it be paintings or sculptures great artwork can really take your decor to the next level. Its the cherry on top of your decorating sundae.
This is a great example of making a statement with local art and I am obsessed with the decorative sun hats!
Look for inspiration in your favorite vaction spot and remember to have fun with the colors and accessories you use! Any trends you love that I didn’t mention? Tips for other decorators? Leave a comment!
