Inspiration: Trends in Holiday Decorating
Every family has very different traditions for celebrating the same holiday!
I love talking to my friends about what we all do for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and about when we decorate the tree etc.
One story I found particularly funny was about my friend who had 2 Christmas trees. One was upstairs in her family room and one in the basement. Her mom would decorate the upstairs tree in coordinating colored glass ornaments, but the kids wanted to hang the ornaments they made in school or got on vacation, so they had what they called the “crap” tree in the basement!
I thought that was pretty clever for those who don’t want their tree to interfere with their décor and who want to stay on trend during the holidays.
One trend I have noticed is that many decorations aren’t the typical red and green anymore. Bright and glitzy colors are becoming the new staples in decorating for the holidays.
Another holiday trend is Ivory candles which float! Fill a glass candle holder or hurricane with water and add the candle for a beautiful effect.
My grandma uses a candle that’s shaped like a poinsettia and its really pretty.
I like how the picture below has colorful cranberries that float on the water, adding elegance and seasonal charm to a holiday table.
Adding slip covers or switching out the cushions on chairs is an easy way to change up the color scheme, freshen your house for the onslaught of visitors, and work in themed patterns and designs.

Themed outdoor decorations have also come into play. Gone are the days of mismatched candy canes and a few strand of multicolored lights and in are the days of color coordinated, classic and elegant outdoor displays.
Another major trend is acknowledging all holidays in your decorations. Many families are starting to go to neutral colors for the holidays (hence the emergence of bright colors) and incorporating menorahs and other religious decorations into their homes to include all of their friends and family.
Please share your favorite holiday traditions in the comments below. I’d love to hear them! Especially if you have a good cookie recipe!!!
