Lifestyle: 5 Tips for Relieving Holiday Stress
One of the things I love about my intern Grace, is that she brings ideas to the table that are personal, unique and refreshing. I think it’s great that she already has us thinking about the holiday season. After all, the sooner we start planning, the less stress we’ll all have. She’s got some great tips for us to think about.
The holidays can be a stressful time. With all the fun and merriment, comes an extra long to do list and a change in schedules, that can be very overwhelming. Here I will list a few stress relieving ideas!!
1. If you aren’t already, try doing yoga! Its hard to squeeze in time to work out during the holiday rush, let a lone to set aside a little time for yourself, but with yoga you can multitask! Pick up a yoga for beginners DVD and take some time to quiet your mind. Once you try it you’ll be hooked!
I’ve actually tried this DVD and really liked it because the instructor touches on the spiritual aspects of yoga without it seeming hokey or too cheesy. Plus its only $8.99 from Barnes and Noble
2. Set aside some time each night to take a break and have a glass of wine. Wine is a natural relaxant and it is also important to establish a routine that helps separate the chaos from the comfort. During your cocktail hour don’t worry about wrapping presents or baking cookies just relax!
3. Shape.com has an article listing 20 different stress relief tactics and one of them is simply prepping for tomorrow. If you know you have 30 million things to do tomorrow and its keeping you awake at night, get up and try to get some done! Not only will it make it easier to fall asleep, but you will also sleep sounder and be better rested for the 20 million things you have left to do. After all, why put off till tomorrow what you could get done today!
4. With all the awesome heavy food that’s around during the holidays its very easy for your system to get out of whack. Psychologists and other researchers recommend maintaining a healthy diet when stress strikes. As hard as it is to hover by the veggie tray, when the cookies are right there, it will pay off in the long run!
5. Let your feelings out! If your mother in law’s nit picking is driving you insane call your friend and vent or if you’d rather write about it pick up a journal and get to work. Holding everything inside will only make you more anxious and even more likely to explode.
