How to have a successful interior design experience
Like anything else, when you are ready to move forward with a project, you want to link up with someone who understands your vision. Here is some food for thought when choosing a design professional.
1. Choose someone who you connect with What I mean by this is, some personalities are simply not going to work well together. The decorating journey is often long. You will spend a significant amount of time together, so it’s imperative that you gel. If there is any sign of an imbalance, pay attention to this.
2. Look at before and after photos- I know this sounds obvious, but sometimes we just see the “after” photos, which only tells part of a story. It’s important to see what issues, were actually addressed. Every design project comes with it’s unique challenges, and understanding why certain items were chosen, or why a specific layout was recommended is important.
3. Look at their Pinterest boards Pin boards say something about a person’s style and taste. If you find yourself “pinning” several items from designers boards, It may be an indication that you are in harmony and might be a good fit. 4. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions Most professionals want to understand as much as they can about your lifestyle, how you will use your space, your favorite colors, items, hobbies etc. 5. Gather a collection of anything that resonates with you to take to your first appointment. Pictures of rooms, or furnishings, samples of paint colors and fabrics etc. The more you have, the easier it is for the design professional to understand your vision and preferences. 6. Communicate your budget guidelines This is the part of the design process that is not always comfortable, yet it is one of the most important. This will alleviate unrealistic recommendations. If you are interested in a one of a kind exclusive import, your designer will not waste his or her time looking for a domestic one. Conversely, If you are looking for a unique art piece for your living room project, that is less than ($0.00), anything over that will be excluded from consideration. 7. Find out what the designer’s natural inclination is: If you have an appreciation for antiques, someone who has an affinity for contemporary spaces may not be a perfect fit. You might also run into a designer whose specialty is kitchen remodels, or who prefers taking new construction only. These are important things to know. 8. Know that the design process can happen in stages One room at a time, or one level at at time, is less overwhelming and more manageable for most people. You don’t have to tackle everything at once. You are more likely to choose better, and be happier with your project when you can approach it in manageable pieces. Designers do have your best interest at heart. At the end of the day, the ultimate reward after all, is a happy client. Make today awesome! Do you need help getting a jump start on a project?
