From the Runway to your home It’s a Jungle out there.

My teenage daughter and I will be doing a few joint posts together where we will show you how fashion and interior design often intersect.

Animal Prints

I am a big fan of animal prints. I think they add a little sultriness, lushness, and just the right zing to decor.  They just have so much personality!

All it takes is a throw and a few pillows on your sofa or bed to give it a zippy lift.  Below is an example of how we added animal print to a bedroom mood board without it being “over the top”.

The past couple of days i’ve been on the look out for some dining room chairs for a client. And while perusing vendor catalogs I was taken aback by how often I saw animal skins.  They are literally everywhere and on everything from coasters to candles, area rugs, dinner ware and even door pulls.

Here’s a chair that I found and just fell in love with. Isn’t it gorgeous?

The toughest part of my job is having restraint when I come across a good buy or kool statement piece like this.  This chair would be nice as a solo act in a niche or entryway. Or as a part of a pair (one at each end of a dining room table) This style is surely not for the faint at heart.  And is not considered to be a smart purchase if you’re looking for something more traditional.  It has good bones though and could be reupholstered down the road to something more transitional.

If you decide to add animal print to your decor, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

1.  All you need is a sprinkle here and touch there.  The fine line of “gaudiness” is easy to cross if you’re not careful.

2.  Adding a (tasteful) animal print area rug in your library or home office would be a fun addition.

3.  How about adding a table lamp or two to your nightstands and an animal throw across the bed for a little sassiness in the master suite.

4.  Have you seen skins on hardware?  Imagine how kool your dresser would look with this fun detail added to it.   Decorating and design is largely in the details.

Go ahead pick up some kool accent pieces, step out of your comfort zone a little and explore one of the latest trends in fashion and design.  If you didn’t get the chance head on over to  inexpensivechic.com  for a few fashion tips.  Tame or wild?  Wild right?
