How to wednesday: Decorating? How to get it right

How to

Before I became a certified interior decorator, I did a good job at making my home look nice.

I knew what I liked and what looked good, but I didn’t necessarily know why it worked.

What’s awesome about knowing why something works is magical, saves time and expense and increases the likelihood of getting it right.

There are key ingredients to a successfully executed design plan like balance, mood, symmetry, scale, weight, texture, pattern, color, and movement to name a few.

At the end of the day the key to a successful plan are when the aesthetic and functional aspects of a space come together.  And when you walk through the doors of your home, you feel good about living there.

So how do you get it right?

1.Know your style or be open to discovering it

2. Choose your color palette…Keep it within 3-4 colorscolor palette

3. Decide on a theme..This determines what selections you’ll make for your project

4. Tackle 1-3 rooms at a time…Creating and executing a design plan can be overwhelming and expensive. To get what you want without compromising, it’s best to plan it in stages.

5. Know your budget..This is crucial, as the sky’s the limit for beautiful design “options”.  “Staying in a certain lane” keeps the design process focused.  There will be certain items that you should splurge on, and others can be shopped more affordably.

6. Choose large furniture pieces first and then fill in with your mid size functional pieces.large furniture

7. Don’t forget the importance of lighting- Look for lighting that adds both beauty and function.  Think sconces for mood lighting, table/floor lamps for task lighting, and chandeliers for drama and impact.lighting

8. Address your flooring – consider high traffic areas, allergy issues, how cozy you want the space, or if you want to use sustainable green elements.

9. Select accessories that will give your space it’s “flava”

10. Give yourself time – custom orders, overseeing deliveries, coordinating painters and contractors take time and patience.

11. Measure, measure, measure (doorways, entryways, windows, stairways, rooms)- Will your large scale furniture fit through the doorways and entryways??

12. Enlist help from a professional – DIY is super great and there are definite benefits, but at the end of the day, it may be wise to collaborate with a professional.
