You just purchased a new home, or you’re considering some changes in your existing one. How do you arrange the furniture?  Are you currently maximizing your space? Do you see potential in creating better flow? teen space

I have had the pleasure of helping clients answer similar questions.  In fact, the floor plans here are from actual clients that I’ve worked with over the past several month.

Here are a few examples

SECTIONALS

Sectionals are very popular and offer flexibility, comfort, and style to family rooms, living rooms, and lower levels. They  are usually for casual and comfy spaces, but can also enhance sophisticated living room spaces too.

I often make the spaces conversational, and recommend ottomans in place of cocktail tables. They give you a chance to kick your feet up, set a tray of snacks on, and create extra seating for guests.

The most popular shapes are L and U shaped configurations. I also like to include a sofa table or side tables nearby to accommodate snacks and drinks.

Modular styles are great for maximizing flexibility, they usually have no arms and are finished on all sides.  Chaise options are great too for adding comfort.  You can also create a chaise effect with an ottoman.

Bedrooms

Sometimes clients want their master bedroom to mimic a hotel suite, allowing for ultimate relaxation, reading and lounging. In addition to maximizing furniture placement, lighting, color choices and accessories are key to setting the perfect mood.

Reading nooks are ideal for a cozy place to read.  Here I chose  task lighting, an overstuffed chair and ottoman to maximize comfiness.

Sofas and chairs

If sectionals aren’t your thing, arrange your furniture using sofas and chairs. Keeping it conversational, using an L shape, U shape, or “X” shape.

Got an open floor plan? Rugs help to define areas in your home.

Furniture arrangement tips

Make it conversational

Move your furniture away from the walls when you can and define them with area rugs…Yes it’s okay to layer an area rug over carpet 😉

Allow at least 3ft around the furniture for good traffic flow

Make sure your coffee table and side tables are within reach and easy to access for drinks and snacks

Consider swivel chairs to swivel toward conversation or toward the the tv for easy viewing

Got a long room? Try dividing it into two conversation areas

Create a hotel suite within your master bedroom, add a coffee or wine bar or seating area

Create zones in teen spaces, like a sleep zone, study zone, storage zone and kick back zone.

Use ottomans in place of cocktail tables for added flexibility , they come in fun fabrics, leather and different shapes too.
