This is What the Design Industry Will Look Like in 2018
According to the leading trend forecasting site WGSN, 2018 will be the year of sophisticated sustainability. Consumers will no longer be satisfied with “go green” marketing ploys, but they’ll expect sustainability to be an industry standard. Instead of purchasing things that just take up space, the 2018 consumer will want their purchases to add value to their lives.
The focus will shift from buying products to purchasing systems and services.
Typography greatly influences how we process and understand information, but as the speed of technology grows, we often glance over billboards and advertisements we see day to day. Designers are using typography for good by helping with issues such as homelessness. The Homeless Fonts Organization created fonts based off the handwriting of homeless people, sells the typefaces to companies, and donates the proceeds back to the owners of the fonts. The Urban Type Experiment and Signs for the Homeless projects do something similar and provide homeless people with gorgeous handwritten signs to help increase donations and start conversations with passerbys.
Waste will become beautiful.
Studio Ilio, created by Swiss designer Fabio Hendry and Korean-born Seongil Choi have come up with a new way of recycling waste material left over from 3D printing. They dip wire structures in a bath of this unrecyclable 3D waste which melts and adheres to the wires when heated. Creating a solid body of art (see stools above). The flexibility of the wire allows for any desired structure to be achieved.
Mass production will recede and designed-to-order will be the way to go.
With mass production of goods comes the inevitable waste. Sustainable designers can solve this problem by making made-to-order pieces. This will allow for the customization of goods, leading to a satisfied consumer who also gets to walk away with a one-of-a-kind treasure. Jewelry designer Florian Milker created the piece above.
We’ve made strides in the design industry as it pertains to sustainability, but we still have a long way to go. In 2018, it’s predicted that eco-friendly design will be something most consumers demand, and companies need to be able to keep up to meet those demands.
