Sundays with Ydp: How much fabric you need to make pillows?
If you’re like many of us, when the seasons change, you like to update “easy-to-change” things around the house. Things like pillows, bedding, and home accessories. They are a smart way to achieve affordable yet refreshing results.
Pillows are my favorite easy update and back in the day, when I had “spare time” I would purchase beautiful fabrics and make them. The cool thing is, pillows don’t require a ton of yardage, so you can splurge on your fabric purchase.
*Here are standard pillow sizes and the amount of fabric needed
14″ x 14″………….1/2 yd
16″ x 16″………….1/2 yd
18″ x 18″…………..5/8 yd
20″ x20″………….3/4 yd
30″ x30″…………..1 yd
*The yardage is based on 54″ wide fabric (solid color). Do buy extra when using patterns, to allow for pattern matching.
Imagine the fun and creative license you can have making kidney and bolster pillows
Or you might embellish your pillows with fringe or cording for a designers touch. If you have a lot of angles in the room, add a few round pillows to change things up.
Whimsical pillows can create a fun and uplifting vibe and make great conversation pieces
Design tip of the day:
Shop remnant fabrics to maximize your savings. You can often get high end decorator fabrics (that only have 2 yds or less left on the bolt) for significant savings.

Standard bed pillow 20×26……..5/8 yds
Queen size bed pillow 20 x 30….1 1/8 yds
King size bed pillow 36×36……….1 1/4 yds
