Decorating with not-so sleepy Neutrals
Fabrics can be a terrific starting point and inspiration for any project, and these were the foundation for a recent great room project.
The solid gray chenille fabric was chosen for the sectional
I recommended something that would stand up to everyday lounging and was kid and pet-friendly. Tightly woven chenilles are known for their softness, strength and durability.
We chose a mix of patterns and textures for the pillows and ottoman
A mix of patterned pillow fabrics are usually added to bring in a little fun. Most clients want their “pop” and energy using bold colors, but this client wanted to stick with neutrals. The good news is, we could achieve a bold look or (pop) using a patterned neutral .
We added this top grain leather for a deep rich addition to the room. It brought in a smooth luxe appeal on two tufted chairs.
Once the fabrics are chosen, the next natural step is to select paint colors for the space. It’s much easier to match a paint color to the furnishings in a space, instead of the other way around.
Here’s our room
Before paint color
Let’s see how the new fabrics worked in the space.
While these may be neutral colors, they sure make a statement. The large scale print on the storage ottomans were the client’s favorite fabric and it really spoke to her outgoing personality. The expansive wall (behind the sofa) begged for something large and this abstract piece sure delivered. You may notice that in the before photo (above) the shelves were a little diminutive for the wall.
My client was pretty hesitant about drapery panels for her picture windows. Her back yard is private and gorgeous. We chose to treat the windows with single width stationary panels that softened the look of the windows without sacrificing the view. The 164″ length ended up working perfectly and making a grand statement in the room.
While we could chosen solid drapery panels, subtlety was not the look we were going. My client definitely wanted more of a wow factor instead.
The process of choosing fabrics requires looking at several combinations and hardware finishes before making the final selection.
In the end we achieved a successful refresh that was perfect for the family. What I love most about any project is, they are all as unique as the individuals I design for.
The sectional, chairs and side tables are purchases from Bassett furniture. I really love how they can produce quality custom products within a 30 day timeframe. The industry standard is usually 6-8 weeks and sometimes longer. I also like that their selections are primarily transitional and can fit in with most design styles.
This week’s design tip
If you prefer a neutral color palette, mix up your textures, prints, and finishes. Try subtle and deep, smooth and rough, large scale and small for a neutral but not-so sleepy room.
