Oh my goodness, It was literally 70 degrees, and lovely yesterday and today I’m wearing gloves a hat and two layers of clothing.  What the hey hey? My mother in law is visiting and she decided to join me for a walk in the park on this windy, cold morning.  My plan was to look for naked fallen branches for a project I’d been considering.

We ended up with not only naked fallen branches, but pine cones, driftwood and greenery.

I had planned to use the sticks for a canvas art project, but somehow got derailed.  It occurred to me that I should postpone that project for a more time sensitive one.  Afterall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are knocking on the door. So here’s to decorating for the holiday season without spending a dime.

We started by trimming a few branches from our trees in the backyard. I was a little nervous about this, because our trees are beautiful and It felt wrong. It was like I was disturbing mother nature. I mean, these trees are majestic and shaped so beautifully.  I usually trim our bushes when they grow out of shape, but this was different, they were perfect.

My mother in law on the other hand said “Girl it’s fine, they’ll grow back, plus we’re trimming the lower hanging branches…so quit your whining”.  🙁

So here we go

greenery

First I layered the greenery from the cut branches onto my planter boxes.  unnamed-13

For color, I added poinsettias (brought them out of storage) You can also add color using holiday ornaments  or decorative bows.  Don’t have any? Ask Family and friends to donate old ornaments.

I added a layer of pinecones and holly branches to add more depthholiday decor

Lastly, I added branches for height.  Right now I’m considering spray painting the branches white, silver or gold….but the jury is still out.

Here’s my wreath from years past that I usually update with a new bow. This year I decided to simply add decorative ribbon behind the wreath for a little interest. The red  also looks nice with the nearby poinsettias

It’s true this decor didn’t cost a thing thanks to mother nature’s fallen branches, pine cones, a little tree trimming, and bringing items out of storage.
