Pom Poms of Holly! DIY Christmas Wreath
Our friend Laura Wize is back with a great DIY project. Learn how to customize your holiday wreath with adorable pom poms…… AND…….. drum roll please………you can make them in less than 3 minutes. Can I get a woot woot!!
The first salutation to your guests this holiday season will be the wreath on your front door. The way I feel about my door decor is the same way I feel about a party dress I don’t want to see it on anyone else’s doorstep. This year I wanted an unexpected element on my wreath, pom poms. I love a good pom pom it’s fun and rustic much like a walk through one of my favorite stores Anthropologie.
For this project you will need:
1 Artificial Pine Wreath
Pom Pom Maker (you can find one here)
1 Bouquet of Poinsettias or your silk flower of choice
1 Skein of Yarn (I used Issac Mizrahi yarn from Michael’s, but any yarn will do)
1 Pair of sharp scissors
1 Pair of wire cutters
1 Decorative Bow ( you can make your own or purchase one already made)
Floral wire for the bow (if you choose to add a bow)
Step 1 | Make Pom Poms
The first order of business is making your own pom poms. You will need a pom pom maker tool it makes the process so much easier. You can make a ton of pom poms in little to no time. It’s the perfect activity for when your binge watching Netflix.
- Wrap the yarn around one side of the pom pom maker and without cutting the yarn wrap the other side of the pom pom maker with yarn.
2. Once you have wrapped both sides of the pom pom maker cut the yarn down the center.
3. Cut a length of yarn and use the yarn to tie a knot in the center of the pom pom maker. Lift both ends of the pom pom maker and pull the pom pom maker apart in the center. You may want to tie an additional knot to ensure the center of the pom pom is secure.
4. Fluff your pom pom and give it a little haircut to ensure that your pom pom is round.
You will want to make about 10 Pom Poms
Now that you have your pom poms finished you can begin assembling the wreath. The first thing you will want to do with an artificial wreath is FLUFF it. Fluff for your life! Playing with the branches will give your fake wreath a life like feel, play until your heart’s content and fill the empty spaces of your wreath.
Step 2: Assembly
- After you have fluffed your wreath, you can now attach the pom poms by placing the pom poms where you want them and tying the longer strings to the wreath wire. Don’t cut the excess yarn yet you will want the length to secure the flowers.
2. Use your wire cutters and snip each flower stem from the bouquet so that you can have individual flowers.
3. Place the flowers in between the pom poms and secure them in the back with the excess yarn from the pom poms.
After you attach the flowers and pom poms they should look like this. You can attach a bow or any other decoration you like with a little floral wire.
This project is so versatile and you can use pom poms as a replacement for bows on wrapped presents all throughout the holiday season.
