8 Signs of work life imbalance and how to get it back...

The workplace is upping the wellness and work-life balance initiatives.  It’s an approach to reducing employee burnout and healthcare costs.  Plus, you are not of much use if you are dead. However, even with the spoken agreement to take care of yourself, putting it into practice usually remains the challenge.  Often we are mentally unable to unplug. If you see the street lights every night after work and the pooch sac forming over your pants, there may be a compromise in your balance. Life exists on the other side of 5 o’clock. How do you know when you are a runaway train in the office and no one is rushing to put the breaks on you?

Below are 8 signs:

  1. You are a runaway train in the office and no one is rushing to put the breaks on you.

  2. You are always tired.  Not sleepy.  Tired. In a deep-fried fuzz constantly.

  3. When people ask, How have things been? What have you been up to? You answer with the same responses such as, Just work, and Really busy.

  4. Your face temporarily looks 10 years older than your actual age.

  5. You don’t see your girlfriends that live in a one-mile radius of you anymore.

  6. Your home is becoming untidy beyond your normal level of clutter

  7. Unbalanced meals: You are actually comforted by food rather than nourished, which is a sign of developing stress-eating habits.

  8. You’re not happy.  You haven’t been.  For a long time.

While being a team player is important, communicating your needs to yourself is foremost. There is no team player without a healthy, balanced you. Also, remember there is not less responsibility when you advance at work, only more coping mechanisms.  Set a good precedence for what you will do and allow to be done to you down that line.

declutter

Take a weekend or a throw-away weeknight.  Start with de-cluttering your home. The unread mail, rotten food, dirt ring around the tub with your footprints in it, the bed that is never made. Reclaim these spaces. Take a moment to make your home your respite again. If you live with a partner or friend, communicate that you would like to tidy up and request their buy-in on creating a de-stressed space. Uncluttered resting areas may assist in your better night’s sleep.

healty breakfast

Get eating habits back on track with breakfast that works for you. Everyone isn’t into the bacon and eggs. A yogurt with nuts and fruit or a simple PB&J will give you fuel to help you abate the stressed-starving-eat showdown at lunch or dinnertime.

couples yoga

Working out with a friend is a good 2-in-1; a workout and catch-up. A jog or walk will help clear your mind on the ever-present stressor: work. Now you can make a list of what is dragging at the office and reset mentally for the days ahead.

Before you know it, you will be balanced once again. You will develop improved stopping points for tasks and your days will not be on a whim of everything that comes to demand your attention. Take care of yourself. Boundaries and clarity are keys to not resenting work and reclaiming the other side of 5.
