How to tame clutter when you have no storage space
Um talk about an uninspiring space? This is what my office looked like on moving day last May. Having downsized, I went from a sizeable office with plenty of storage to an office half it’s size and with none. This is not a good thing for someone like me. I’m not super messy, but I have my days 🙁
So I wanted an affordable option. Hiring someone to install custom shelving or built -ins was not in the cards.
Need extra storage space? Give these tips a try
1. Research the best options to meet your needs.
I researched a plethora of options online, through my vendors and the local big box stores. At the end of the day, Ikea met my needs for convenience and affordability.
My son is not a big fan of chores, but he loves putting things together, so I enlisted his help to assemble the shelving units that would control the overwhelming Mess in my office. I was looking for something under $100, so I purchased 2 kallax shelving units to store my things. In fact, what was $89.99 last year is now only $69.99. l like that they come in a few different colors and you can use them for a vertical or horizontal orientation.
2. Buy the right size for your space
My office is pretty small, so purchasing two 30 3/8 X 57 7/8 units was perfect, but if you need larger on smaller options, they are also available.
3. Choose an inspiring color scheme
It’s important to get organized, and equally important to create a space you’ll want to actually work in
I decided that a little turquoise would give my black and white office a much needed pop of color.
4. Contain clutter with storage bins and boxes
If you’re like most people, you’ll appreciate having a few hidden storage options. I chose the skubb storage boxes with handles to hide smaller items.
To stay with my color scheme, I grabbed this cute rolling utility cart. It’s perfect for my stationery, art supplies and keeps essentials at an arm’s reach. The wheels are an added bonus, making it glide effortlessly around the room.
5. Add practical and fun accents to support your color story
I couldn’t pass up these paper clips and binder clips from office depot. They were exactly the same color as my storage boxes. I decided to place them in mason jars for easy access. I also added a scented candle and sprinkles because I love walking into a room that smells yummy.
I’m happy to report that my office went from this uninspiring space
To one that I look forward to entering each morning.
There is a place for everything, and everything is in it’s place. Even the ottoman (above) provides seating and storage options.
