Prints can be intimidating when designing a room. Mixing multiple prints is an even harder challenge to overcome. When done right, mixing prints can bring dimension and color to an otherwise simple room. Here are some tips to consider when working with multiple prints in your home.

1. Color is very important when beginning the design of your room. Choose a color or a print that will anchor the room. By having one color as a focus, it will be easy to choose like colors when adding additional prints.

2. Consider scale when adding prints. It’s best to have different sizes of prints so the eye is not overwhelmed. Choose one strong print and add small to medium scaled prints to accent.

3. It is recommended that each print share at least one similar color. This could be an accent in one of the patterns or the patterns could share the same background color. It is common to mix prints when they share a white background, like the pictures above.

4. Make sure there is a solid color present in the room. With too many prints, the eye can’t focus. By having one solid color, such as a white couch, the prints are easily highlighted and distinct from one another.

5. Try adding pops of color in the accents of the room. Since the prints you’re mixing are most likely in the same color family, choose colors that will pop against the print. This can also be seen in the pictures above.

6. It is important to experiment with texture. Don’t feel restricted to only using prints on fabrics. Add plates, candles, and lamps that have print. This will add to the dimension of the room.

7. If you have a print that features multiple colors, choose one of its colors to feature in another print. For example, highlight a blue shade in a floral pillow by featuring that blue in an ikat print pillow.

9. Keep in mind your overall vision for the room. If you are going for a modern and streamlined look, it’s not best to choose rustic patterns with leaves or a retro pattern. Mixing these prints together would stray away from your overall theme, leaving it confusing.

10. There are no rules as to what type of patterns you can mix. Stripes and floral are a popular combination.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take chances. Mix prints in colors you love and always have a focal point. Good luck!
