If the term “transitional” means nothing to you when it comes to interior design, don’t worry. It’s a relatively new but widespread trend in home decor, but the one that should certainly attract your attention. Transitional style combines modern and traditional elements in one space and is perfect for people who want to forget all about rules and just live in a space that’s decorated with their favorite things. However, that doesn’t mean there are absolutely no guidelines in transitional style. Actually, this style is pretty hard to pull off and get a cohesive design. But, with a little help of this guide, you’ll certainly succeed in decorating your home in transitional style without any problem. Take a look!
Start with colors
The transitional palette concentrates on neutral and natural colors in order to create a clean and calming space. However, if you want to add some depth to the space, you can employ dark brown to your tan, vanilla or beige walls. Neutral colors will let furniture take the center stage.
Don’t be scared to make a statement
One small detail can quickly become a major design element in transitional style. For instance, you can keep the clean look of the space and still achieve a component of interest by exaggerating certain details. Opt for a classic but oversized herringbone flooring that’s both traditional and contemporary, or make your trayed ceiling a novelty element. By simply elevating classical components you can achieve an interesting and contemporary look. Don’t hesitate to keep traditional style on its toes!
Fabrics and materials for experimentation
The whole transitional style is pretty poor in color, which leaves a lot of space to play and experiment with textures. You can combine smooth cotton with flexible distressed leathers and exotic chenille. The idea is to achieve a casual and comfortable look that still has a bit of restraint in itself. These fabrics will help you do just that, so feel free to experiment. Also, materials like metals and glass are often used together. But, unlike in contemporary style where we have completely metallic or glass furniture, in the transitional style, we mostly use it to add detail.
Furniture of all shapes
In transitional style, you can expect to see curves combined with straight and sharp lines. This look brings great balance to the space and brings out both feminine and masculine sides of the design. For instance, beautiful modern sofas with clean lines will fit in perfectly with a weathered wooden coffee table. Once again, furniture should be in the center of attention, combined with only a few carefully picked decorations. The accent here is on simplicity and comfort, so keep it minimalist.
Show off your personality
Personalization is what brings an otherwise traditional space to a more contemporary level. For instance, a simple and traditional room can greatly benefit from a bit of your quirky personality. Opt for a wallpapered statement wall or some interesting decorative elements you’ve collected on your travels. Feel free to show off your eclectic accessories, whether it’s an intricate Asian inspired room dividers or more subdued and romantic metallic candlesticks. Transitional style is very flexible when it comes to accessories (which is possibly one of its best features), so don’t hesitate to experiment. By leaving the rest of the space neutral, you’ll provide a perfect backdrop for your accent elements. And the best thing is that they are easily taken down and replaced once you want a bit of a change.
