It’s A New Year… The Perfect Time To Get Organized!

Marissa provides some useful, practical and fun tips on getting organized for the new year.

Now that the holidays are over it’s time to pack up all those decorations until next year. Why not start off 2012 right by really getting organized? Put the decorations away so that putting them up next year will be a piece of cake, and while you’re at it, straighten up the rest of the house as well!

The number one key to organization is labeling. Without labels things get put in the wrong place and it is much harder to find what you are looking for. Labeling doesn’t have to be boring or ugly either. It can look nice like the labels on the tins above, which are made with chalkboard paint. This works great for labeling because you can always just erase the title and change it to something new if you decide to put something different inside.

It is important to use “dead space” for storage, such as your garage ceiling. Check out these step-by-step instructions for how to install these overhead storage bins. They work great for outdoor equipment like camping and sporting goods as shown in the picture, but this is also a great place for holiday decorations.

How you would like to organize your holiday decorations is completely up to you and is likely to be different depending on what kinds of decorations you use and how your house is set up. If you tend to put the same decorations in the same places each year, I would suggest trying to organize by room, like “kitchen” or “living room”. If you vary where you put things try organizing by the type of decoration, like “ornaments” or “wreaths”.

To keep those ornaments organized you can buy a nifty box like the one above from stores like Target or Bed, Bath, and Beyond, or you can make your own similar box. If you have one of those storage containers just lying around, simply lay flat pieces of cardboard diagonally and create slits vertically to create the dividers to make it look something like this:

Use bread tags to label all of those messy cords. Simple, yet useful!

Keep the cords organized on top of your desk with this super easy and creative method… use binder clips! Check out The Storage Geek for even more ideas for keeping messy cords organized.

Use a magnetic strip to keep track of all those messy bobby pins. Place the strip behind a vanity door or on the inside of a cabinet door.

Use PVC pipe for holding curling irons and cords right on the inside of your cabinet door! Check out The Family Handyman for how to make this and other bathroom storage techniques.

A magnetic makeup board! I know my makeup is one of the messiest parts of my room… but this board makes it look so much nicer! Just make sure you get strong enough magnets for the back of the makeup so it sticks to the board.

  1. […] step. You could also use something (and actually make it yourself!) like what is shown in my organizational post. I really like the organizer in the second photo as well- how creative is that chalk board?! […]
