“Oh, the Places You’ll Go”: Maps as Inspiration

by / Tuesday, 17 January 2012 / Published in INSPIRATION STATION

One year ago this week I left to live in Italy for six months. I spent some time over winter break sifting through pictures, train tickets, and city maps from the places I visited while abroad. I also stumbled across my map of Europe, which was the focal point of my room for 6 months. This map was not only used for decoration but it also served the purpose of displaying each city and country I visited via pin.

Maps and globes can take on an old world charm or a modern spin as a design feature in your home. This room was inspired by the colors of the map of Europe.  Green, blue, and yellow hues are transferred from the map into the room itself.

Are you having trouble finding a piece of artwork to place in your home?  If you’re bored with a traditional landscape or abstract art as a focal piece, a map is a nice alternative.

Choose a map of a city, country, or continent that holds special meaning to you. It can be a nontraditional take on displaying your favorite place in your home. If you love New York City, a city map can be a a great reminder of your time spent there.

If you have an awkward shaped map, like this one of Italy, group the map together in different frames.  This is an innovative take on the concept.

Globes can be small or big accessories to place on a shelf instead of a traditional vase.  This room used globes in a subtle way by placing a collection at the very top of a bookshelf.
