The Interior Design Mistakes That No One Should Be Making
Which interior design mistakes are you making? Discover some of the most common mistakes made and how to avoid them from our guest blogger.
Interior design remains one of the most fulfilling and rewarding ways that you can spend your time. However, because it can involve some sizeable investment, you need to avoid making some of the more telling mistakes. That’s why I’ve put together this little list of the most common mistakes that occur, and how they can be avoided: Hanging the artwork too high. This is a funny old problem, but you’d be surprised how much of a difference it can make. As well as affecting how the height of the room is perceived, it’ll also lead to those guests who have an enthusiasm for art walking around with some rather cricked necks! Try and keep your artwork around head height, so that everyone can enjoy it.

Not using mirrors. One of the classic tricks in interior design is rather sadly one that a fair few people don’t make use of. Here we go: mirrors are your secret weapon. In smaller spaces, the right mirror use can make a huge difference to how big the room comes across as. In the larger rooms, they can also really improve the atmosphere: especially if you’re hosting a party.

Overdoing the Furnishings. Picking out the perfect furniture is undoubtedly a wonderful thing, especially if you’ve picked up a bargain. However, I’ve seen more than one room that is very obviously suffering from ‘I’ve bought too many things-itis’. Whilst that lovely black picture frame might look lovely in the shop, it’s not going to look the part in your new navy blue kitchen! Purchase a few smaller, high-quality items instead: it’ll make the room look far better.

Picking the Paint First. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there: you’re wondering the aisles of your latest DIY store, when you see that perfect shade of paint. Before you know it, you’ve bought four tins of the stuff and covered the spare room. Otherwise you might end up doing what I did and having to go over the whole coat because you can’t find any materials that match. The lesson here: furniture before paint!

Rushing. Repeat after me: ‘I will not rush designing my room’. Interior design is something that done wrong, will irritate you each and every time you wonder into the room. No one, after all, rushes a masterpiece! If you think you need a few weeks to decide on the perfect sofa, take that time. If you really want to consult your mum on what she thinks of the picture frames, then do so. If you’re spending that much money, it deserves to be perfect.
