9 Surprising ways to help you determine your design style

So what is your design style?  Can you sum it up in a simple sentence? More times than not, most people struggle with the answer but here are some considerations that will inspire you to create your authentic space and hone in on your style.

We have influences all around us when it comes to figuring out our design style, like the home you grew up in or a friend’s home you’ve visited.

And if your last hotel or Airbnb stay was fabulous, chances are you found yourself wanting to duplicate the look in your own home.

Today, I want to discuss a few surprising ways to  tap into your design style to help you create your authentic home because creating a home that fits your personal style is what it’s all about.

Ready?  Let’s go!

1. Take a queue from your closet

Are your outfits mostly the same color?  Are they casual, elegant, quirky/trendy? Or do you buy classic pieces that stand the test of time? This could be a good place to start in determining your design style.

2. Consider how you respond to colors

What colors make you feel happy, relaxed, inspired?  Do you prefer cool or warm, bold or muted colors? How about color intensity?  Are deep rich tones or light and airy ones more preferable? Color can profoundly add to our enjoyment or discomfort in a home. It’s an important consideration that you want to get right.

3. Consider your favorite car

If budget were of no concern what type of car would you drive? Would it be a luxury brand, an economy car, sporty, rugged, vintage or classic? How might your choice be interpreted in your home?

4. Consider your favorite foods or restaurants

Do you have an adventurous palette of international flavors?  What about burgers, fries or home style comfort foods? Maybe global decor or cozy comforts is where your authenticity lives.  The idea is to explore these nuances to see if there is a connection.

5. Consider your favorite music

Is it jazz, Hip hop, rock, country, classical or does an eclectic mix appeal to you?  Imagine a basement, with a jazzy, lounge vibe or an energetic one with a dance floor.

6. Consider your hobbies

Are you active, a couch potato or a fitness buff? Do you love to travel, enjoy yoga, or meditate?  Imagine the home of a couch potato surrounded by white upholstered furniture.  My guess is, they would not feel very comfortable and relaxed at home. Additionally, overstimulated hues will not be attractive to someone who does yoga and meditation in the home.

7. Vacation style as a consideration

What do your favorite destinations look like? Are they domestic or foreign and what did you like about them?  Have you collected any interesting pieces during your trips that could inspire a theme? Do action packed vacations excite you or restful laid back destinations?

8. Consider your current space

What are your favorite rooms, elements, colors, furnishings etc.  What does it say about you now?  Is it aligned right?  What things need to go and what things need to stay? Is your home your favorite place on the planet?

9.Choose something that inspires you?

It can be an art piece, a painting, a vintage object, something found in nature or a keepsake?  This piece can be the start of what shapes the look and feel of your home or favorite room. It can be the start of creating your authentic space. Pay attention to the colors, shape, design, and what you are specifically drawn to. You may make a cool discovery.

So how do you create a space that feels authentic to your personal taste?   There is no right or wrong approach to figuring it out, but paying attention to the clues from your everyday lifestyle might be more telling than you think.
